When my junior year history teacher announced that we’d be presenting on a significant historical moment, I chose the 1995 film, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ). DDLJ was a turning point in Indian culture that challenged existing ideas around social progress, gender roles, and Indian traditions. Inspired by the movie’s messaging, I drafted a parody that communicated its subtle progressive themes into comedic punchlines. With the help of some friends, I made this vision come to life. We raided our closets for costumes, practiced our lines, and compiled an impressive blooper reel when it was all said and done.
